On November 21, 2025, the results of the annual academician election of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) were officially released. A total of 144 distinguished scholars were newly elected, including 73 CAS Members and 71 CAE Members. Professor Shi Yi from our school was elected a Member of the CAS Division of Information Technical Sciences.

Born in Yixing, Jiangsu Province, in September 1962, with ancestral roots in Dafeng, Jiangsu, Professor Shi Yi is currently Professor and Doctoral Supervisor at the School of Electronic Science and Engineering, and Dean of the School of Microelectronics, Nanjing University. He was awarded the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars in 2002 and recognized as a national leading talent in 2006. His election as a CAS Member came in November 2025.
Professor Shi earned his Bachelor’s degree in Applied Physics from National University of Defense Technology in 1983. He then completed his Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Physics at Nanjing University in 1986 and 1989 respectively. Upon graduation in 1989, he joined Nanjing University as a faculty member and was promoted to full Professor in 1995. He has held multiple key administrative posts, including Chair of the Department of Physics, Executive Vice President of the Institute of Advanced Technology, Dean of the School of Electronic Science and Engineering, and Dean of the School of Microelectronics. He has also conducted visiting research at renowned institutions worldwide, such as Tohoku University and the University of Tokyo in Japan, as well as the University of California, Berkeley and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States.
In addition to his university duties, Professor Shi takes up several important academic appointments. He serves on the Science and Technology Committee of the Ministry of Education, the Electronic Science and Technology Discipline Evaluation Group under the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, and acts as President of the Jiangsu Electronics Institute.
Professor Shi Yi has dedicated himself to fundamental research and talent training in microelectronics for decades. Aligning his research with major national strategic needs, he has led numerous key scientific and technological projects. He has made pioneering and systematic achievements in semiconductor nanotechnology, with remarkable breakthroughs in regulating the physical properties of semiconductor surfaces and interfaces, as well as related materials and devices.
His academic accomplishments have won him many prestigious honors: two Second Class Prizes of the National Natural Science Award (as first and third principal contributor respectively), one Second Class Prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award (first principal contributor), one First Class Prize of the Jiangsu Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award (first principal contributor), and five other provincial and ministerial-level science and technology awards.
To date, he has published more than 700 SCI-indexed papers. Among them are 3 articles in Nature, over 30 in sister journals of Nature and Science, and more than 50 papers in IEEE journals and top-tier microelectronics conferences including IEDM, VLSI and ISSCC. His works have accumulated over 30,000 non-self citations in SCI. He holds more than 80 authorized invention patents and has served as Editor-in-Chief for two English monographs.
